Our focus

Empowering local communities

Climate change and biodiversity loss pose a serious threat to the livelihoods of many coastal communities around the world. We are passionate about designing systems to ensure a just transition. In particular, this means developing the skillsets for a new sustainable ocean economy and the management systems that make those possible.

Ecological monitoring

We collaborate with the local NGO Pelagios Kakunja to hire and train local fishermen in ecological monitoring techniques (baited cameras, capture-recapture tagging). This provides sustainable alternative income sources and develops in both conservationists and fishermen new perpsectives and ways of knowing.

Ecotourism infrastructure

Central to a just transition is the development of sustainable ocean economies. In particular, communities need the business skills (website creation, advertising, and networking) and infrastructure (shaded pangas) for locally-led ecotourism to flourish. See this video made by our collaborators about a new panga for ecotourism for a fishing community at Isla Espiritu Santo.

Tools and technology

Successful stewards of a warming ocean need skills to leverage cutting-edge technology (drones, oceanographic sensors, high resolution weather forecasts) to inform management.
