Sharks International 2026
Colombo, Sri Lanka
Thanks to the generous support of the PME Young Researchers Program, Audrey recently had the incredible opportunity to travel to Sri Lanka for the Sharks International conference and connect with marine scientists from around the globe. She presented a poster summarizing many years of collaborative tagging and telemetry research on critically endangered scalloped hammerheads in the southwestern Gulf of California. The data highlights a concerning absence of adult sharks in the region, underscoring how vital coastal and insular habitats are for juveniles and subadults. Building on these findings, Dr. James Ketchum from our collaborating partner, Pelagios Kakunjá, delivered a compelling presentation proposing actionable management plans. He outlined the crucial first steps toward establishing a dedicated shark sanctuary and migration corridor between Loreto and Cabo Pulmo to shield these vulnerable populations from fishing pressures. It was an inspiring week, and we are excited to integrate global conservation strategies into our ongoing fieldwork in Baja!
Thank you to our partners who made this possible!
