Our focus

Fostering curiosity and responsibility

We work with schools and innovative educators to connect students with research opportunities, a sea-going community, and the sea itself.

Stanford@SEA is a unique collaboration between Stanford University and Sea Education Association in which undergraduates spend five weeks at Hopkins Marine Station and five weeks aboard the sailing research vessel SSV Robert C. Seamans in the Pacific Ocean. Students learn oceanography, marine physiology, policy, maritime studies, conservation, and nautical science, and develop an independent research project that they carry out at sea. We met as students in this program and have returned each cruise since to support the students. The vessel fosters a unique perspective on the blue nature of our planet and our deep interconnectedness as its inhabitants.

The Marine Ecology Research Program at Santa Catalina School in Monterey, California is a three-year program that provides provides an intensive focus on marine science for a select group of students beginning in their sophomore year. Students study in and around the ocean, doing research, learning by observation, testing hypotheses, and experimenting in the bay itself. We are collaborating with students to support their independent research project using satellite and drone techniques to study mangroves in Baja California.

In collaboration with Pelagios Kakunja, we support marine research graduate students in La Paz, BCS by providing opportunities to gain field experience shark tagging, sailing, and scuba diving. We continue to support these students as field technicians for their dissertations.
